Maternal/Child Health Classes

All Maternal/Child Health Classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and board certified lactation consultants. To register, call (703) 369-8543. Please note that classes fill up quickly so register as soon as possible. The Wellness Center reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet the minimum number of participants. Weekend Childbirth Preparation

Designed for busy couples unable to attend the five-week program, this two-day accelerated course covers the same principles taught in the five-week series, but is completed in one weekend. This program provides the expectant mother and support person with information on the normal labor process, comfort techniques, pain management, and post-partum period. Other topics to be discussed include labor interventions, anesthesia, cesarean births, and recovery. (NOTE: A tour of the Birthing Center is not included with this class.)

Baby Care Basics

This class is a must for parents expecting their first child. Learn about your newborn's appearance, diapering, bottle and breastfeeding, cord care, circumcision care, crying, comforting your baby and more. This class is taught by a registered nurse.

Sibling Class

This class is for children between the ages of 3 and 8. This fun, interactive class helps to prepare a child to become a big brother or sister. The youngster will learn what to expect when the new baby arrives, how the baby will look, what the baby eats and more. They will also learn how to hold and diaper a baby. Children will make a big brother/big sister craft to take home. A short tour of the postpartum room and family waiting area in the Birthing Center is included. For infection control purposes, please do not attend if child is sick.

Grandparent's Class

Come take a refresher course to get up-to-date on caring for your grandchild, and learn (or review) new baby care, including sleeping practices, car seat usage, home safety, the basics of choking rescue with infant CPR manikins and more. For more information call (703) 369-8543.

Breastfeeding

This class is taught by a lactation specialist. Learn techniques to make breastfeeding easy and successful. Class fee includes participant and one adult partner.
